On Demo Reel Philosophy

/> I’ve been putting demo reels together for clients for going on three years now doing an average of 2 a week and I enjoy the work. So here’s a little advice to anyone wanting to put something together. The first rule I like to follow is: “Put your best foot forward.” This would basically be how I like to operate. I want whoever’s watching this to be impressed, not only with the skill of the actor, the quality of the production and the excellent script but also with the sheer, gorgeous nature of the actor. Or at least the intense character of the face. This would include eliminating footage with bad lighting or bad angles. Of course the acting is very important but this is Hollywood after all and image counts double.
Another thing people want to do is a little montage and I say, hey, why not? Whatever can make you stand out, I’m all for it. After all, it’s all about you and how long you can hold the attention of a professional and remember, they’ve seen it all and then some. So be creative, spice it up and above all, come in prepared. It’s a really good idea ...

Demo Reel Inverview for Backstage
I was contacted last year by Jessica Gardner, a Features Writer for Back Stage Magazine. The following is an interview she conducted where I had the chance to answer some basic questions about demo reels. If you’re looking at putting a reel together, I hope you find the following interesting and informative.
How long they should be?
This can vary but generally under 2 minutes is a good idea. I often recommend 1-3 minutes but speed reels come in under a minute and a lot of actors prefer longer reels but I suspect that often times they’re the only ones who watch to the end. Better to keep them wanting more than having had enough.
What should be on them?
It’s good to include scenes that show the actors range or scenes that are similar to the work they are trying to get. So an action star shouldn’t put comedy in a reel. It’s good to be genre specific. Scenes with famous actors helps your credibility a lot as will famous films or commercials.
What shouldn’t be on them?
Mainly other actors. Story isn’t that important in a reel. The casting director or producers just want to see that ...

What shouldn’t be on them?
Mainly other actors. Story isn’t that important in a reel. The casting director or producers just want to see that this person can act. Also, anything that might be too offensive, I try to keep out. Or really low production value looking footage from a VHS or something should be kept off if possible. Economy of image is very important. You never want to include anything that’s not showing the actor in a good light or anything that’s not absolutely necessary.

Who are they for?
Demo reel is the new head shot. It’s an opportunity for exposure. The actor can demonstrate ability, look and style to someone in the position to help them get cast in movies and or tv. A demo reel can help an actor get an agent or manager interested. A lot of people need to put their auditions in digital form and have them emailed across the country. That’s another form of demo reel editing that I help people with.

If you don’t have any commercials, should you make your own specifically for your reel?
Some people do this and it can be difficult to shoot something on your own and make it look like a professional quality commercial. We do offer this service at Advanced Media in order to guide people through the process of demo reel production. This is for people trying to break
in with little or no experience We offer a professional production crew and equipment at a very low cost and we can make your script come to life on a budget.

We recently shot interviews for EPKs; most recently we shot footage for the EPK of “Playing the Field”, a feature starring Gerald Butler, Dennis Quaid, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Judy Greer, to be released in 2012.

We are excited to announce that we are expanding our production services towards creating online videos and original series for the web. It goes without saying that online video and movie streaming is competing with network television as the primary source of entertainment for viewers, and popular viral videos are creating viral celebrities who are experiencing a great deal of success in the industry. We will soon be offering full production services to actors in Los Angeles who are interested in starring in their own webisode or webseries. If you have an original script you’d like us to shoot, great, otherwise we can write one catered to you. We are currently in pre-production of our first comedy webseries.

We are also offering our production services to companies interested in creating and hosting promotional videos on their websites; we strongly believe that it will increase traffic to the site and provide viewers with a more personal, interactive experience.
We are also offering our production services to companies interested in uploading promotional videos to their websites.
